Trucking Insurance · Hotshot
Dually pickups pulling gooseneck and flatbed trailers under your own authority. Liability with filings, cargo for the loads you actually pull, and physical damage on the truck and trailer.
Hotshot is a real motor carrier operation with a real DOT number, and insurance companies treat it that way: $750K to $1M liability, filings, cargo for the machinery, building materials and vehicles you haul. What is different is the equipment — a one-ton pickup and a 40-foot gooseneck — and the fact that most hotshotters are new ventures. We place both.
The trap in hotshot is under-insuring cargo. A skid steer or a couple of vehicles on the deck is easily $100,000, and load boards want proof. We size the cargo limit to what you pull, add the wording brokers ask for, and make sure the truck is written as a commercial unit — a personal auto policy on a pickup ends at the first for-hire load.
Hotshot trucking — a dually pulling a gooseneck, and especially a hotshot auto hauler — is one of the hardest risks to place in 2026 — in California, Arizona and every other state. A small number of carriers write it, the minimum premiums are high and the down payments are bigger than for a box truck or a tractor-trailer. We quote it straight and we do not waste your day: send the DOT number, VINs and licenses and we will tell you the same day whether there is a market for your setup and what it costs. If you are still deciding on equipment, our deepest markets by far are box trucks and semi trucks and tractor-trailers.
$750K–$1M primary on the pickup, BMC-91/MCS-90 filed at binding.
$100K standard; higher when you haul equipment or vehicles.
Truck and trailer at stated value, typically 3% to 8%.
Most hotshot starts are first-year authorities; we write them.
Rated correctly for the GVWR you actually run.

Not for insurance. If the combined GVWR is over 26,001 lbs you need a CDL to drive it legally; under that, a regular license. Either way the policy is commercial.
Yes. Hotshot is one of the most common new-venture operations we write.
Personal policies exclude for-hire hauling. Once you carry loads for money under a DOT number the truck has to be on a commercial auto policy.
